October 2011

OCTOBER 2011 NEWSLETTER

Following an extremely difficult few week’s the final race was held. The birds were released on their own from The Twins at 6.17am on Saturday 1st October. At the time of release there was an extremely light east wind, the birds left immediately towards home. When Brian and Manuel Magro stopped at Pimba a couple of hours later the wind was very strong from the southwest.  Most of the way home the wind was probably a straight southerly of between 20-30 kph. We thank Manuel for his assistance in transporting the birds.

Only two birds arrived on the day at 6:34pm and 6:38pm just before dark. Anderson & Moore with a Koopman/Janssen won the race. A sister had previously won in their local Federation in a long race. T K G (Tim Fawcett and partners) was second with a Pryor and Jade Star Lofts (Des Moore) third with a spare bird. Country Class won the Aggregate Points and their bird Gippsland10 2745 BC Hen won the Bird of the Year. Congratulations to the winners and the other prizewinners.

Amongst those in attendance on Saturday were Ross Carr and Bruce Kelly from Mildura who unfortunately left on their long drive home about 5 minutes before the winner arrived. On Sunday morning Nadia & Darrell Curnick and Barbara & David Cunningham from the Country Class syndicate were at the loft. Nadia & Darrell arrived just a couple of minutes before the 5th place bird (bred by syndicate member Ian Young) came in and were there to see the arrival of their Bird of the Year. Janelle & Matthew Moore from the winning partnership spent Sunday afternoon at the loft.

All birds will be held at the loft for the next 21 days. Local birds may be collected from the loft after 25th October. Please contact Brian to make arrangements to collect your birds. Owners of Interstate birds should contact Brian about their birds.

The Presentation BBQ and Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 11th December starting at noon. For catering purposes please let Brian or Penny know if you will be attending.

The South Australian Department of Primary Industries & Resources has recently announced that a permit is required for pigeons to be brought in from non-infected States (NSW; ACT; QLD; WA). A copy is attached for your information. The form should be completed by each owner or person in charge of sending the pigeons and emailed to leonie.down@sa.gov.au. For help in completing this form the telephone number is (08) 8207 7900. Birds cannot be brought in from Victoria. Fortunately, three quarters of our Victorian members have been able to make other arrangements to get birds for next year.

I will repeat the information regarding breeding times. For local flyers and others delivering their birds to the loft the 7th October (eggs 14th –18th October) is the ideal date to pair up. For those sending birds via Adelaide Airport the 5th October (eggs 12th – 16th October) is the ideal date. The birds should be 30-35 days old when delivered.

A reminder to all interstate members that birds sent via Adelaide Airport must be sent on either Friday the 2nd or Friday the 9th of December. Do not send birds on any other days. The club has accounts with Toll Air (Virgin) and Australian air Express that gives members a good saving. The club then sends you an account for the freight charges. Contact Brian or Penny for account details.

Australian air Express is not transporting pigeons at the moment. Members will need to check early November whether or not this has changed. Anyone who hears anything please let us know. If we hear anything we will let you know.
